Melchizedek Priesthood: the power and authority to act in the name of Jesus Christ

Our Heavenly Father, as a God of order, prepared a plan of salvation that if followed would enable each of us, his children, to become like him. The life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, known as the atonement is central to this plan, as it makes it possible for us to live with our Heavenly Father in his kingdom of glory as a family. When we follow the plan of salvation our family will be together forever.

Our Heavenly father has always called prophets to ensure the plan of salvation is properly taught to us, his children, in its correct, inspired form. A prophet has the Melchizedek Priesthood, or the power and authority to act in the name of Jesus Christ. The Melchizedek Priesthood is the same power that Moses used to deliver the children of Israel and part the Red Sea. Peter also used this power to heal the sick after the death and resurrection of Jesus Chris.

In this post I want to look at the qualifications for one, such as a prophet, to be entrusted with the Melchizedek Priesthood. What does it mean to be given the power and authority to act in the name of Jesus Christ?
